How the finder works and FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the AI Model Finder choose a recommendation?
It scores 71 current catalog models (from 71 indexed) against your answers to five questions — workload, priority (quality, cost, speed, or balance), hosting mode, budget ceiling, and required context length — and returns the top computed match plus alternatives. Editorial picks, where we have one, are shown beside the computed match and labelled as opinion.
Is the Model Finder result based on real benchmarks?
Yes. Every recommendation is computed from live catalog metrics (Elo, SWE-bench, latency, and per-token pricing), each carrying its own source and as-of date. Where CompareLLM's editors add their own preference, it appears as a separately labelled 'CompareLLM's Take' — never mixed into the computed result or its numbers.
Can I limit results to open-weight or self-hosted models?
Yes. The Hosting step lets you restrict matches to open-weight models runnable on Ollama, vLLM, or SGLang, or to direct cloud APIs only.
